About DesignPro SEO – Cincinnati, Ohio
My name is Andrew. I guess I have pretty much been a computer geek since my first TRS-80 model 1 , Christmas 1977. I was 7. Ahh, those first days of recording your programs to tape deck, writing down the counter numbers, so you can find where you programs reside and load them again.. Along the way, I’ve had the pleasure/pain of using a myriad of different systems. Various Apple, Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari..
When I was 13 years old, I ordered plans from TN to make a “Ring Detector” or “Modem Answerer” for an Atari 800. They had no “answering’ capabilities, and I wanted to open a Bulletin Board System (BBS), and I did. Eventually upgrading to a 286 in 1985 or so. I knew at an early age that, One day, most everyone will have a computer, and they will talk to each other. I have always had a mind that notices trends.
Also at 13, I began working in my parents retail store in Florence, KY. We opened stores in 3 Greater Cincinnati locations, selling books, music, gifts and collectables. I learned a ton about the back side of running a business, but I also spent many late nights working when I should have been doing homework. By 16, when I could drive, I was able to float to, and manage any of three locations, on any given day. While there I helped implemented a bar code, inventory control system with computerized ordering via modem. This system was used for books, tapes, CDs, and gifts.
In 1991, right after Desert Storm, I signed up to enter the Army. I left in 1992. After basic training, I was assigned to A. Co. 1/22 Infantry, 10th Mountain Division. During this time I was deployed to various places around the world, including: Hurricane Andrew disaster relief (Homestead, Florida), Operation Restore Hope and Operation Continue Hope (Somalia), Operation Uphold Democracy (Haiti)…and others.
About 1998, I began work at my first real IT position. My first weeks were spent integrating and building server systems for an SCO Unix shop in Cincinnati, but before long, I was out consulting with small to medium sized businesses on server and networking technologies. Since that time, I have held various IT positions, including: Consultant, Network Administrator. Exchange Administrator, Enterprise Backup Engineer, Security Consultant, IT Manager, e-Commerce Manager, etc..
All along the way I was generally, “The IT Guy”. As I was consulting with companies in different IT capacities, one subject kept resting in my lap time and time again. The company website. Whether it was the need of one, finding a way to implement wanted technologies into a current site, or securing a web site’s servers, at some point it was going to be up to me. I got the message, businesses need help creating a proper online presence.
Search Engine Optimization
I got bit by the SEO bug in 2006. I had been trying to help a local business contract someone to rework their website, and they were trying to figure out the best way to advertise their relaunch. I was fascinated with the idea of search engine optimization. How could any company NOT want to be at the top of the major search engine for the keywords customers use to find their services, but MOST of the companies out there claiming to bring visitors to your site are completely full of crap. As I had to learn to filter through these snake oil salesmen for the companies I represented, I began to gain more and more knowledge. They have every scheme that you can think of, and many that you can’t. Most of the people claiming to be SEO experts either just took your money with no results or any communication afterwards, or they took your money and spammed out a profile link blast, or comment links. So, I began to fill my head, test and tweak, and I haven’t looked back since. I still believe that there is no better spend of a companies advertising budget than SEO.
I stay active in several SEO communities, and I am always testing new techniques. I love that SEO is changing. What works great for one site, may not work for another. Formulas and strategies that once ruled Google’s front page, (considered white hat or black hat) now cause great harm and cause sites to be penalized. On page SEO has changed, and is no longer enough. You must build your reputation across the internet.Google is always working to improve it’s search engine results pages (SERPs) by actively seeking out SPAM and penalizing. Gone are the days of building a new site with no content on your site and buying a blast of 10,000 to magically claim the top spot. There is just too many competitors and too many sites.
